Google Doodle Pays Tribute To Alexander Calder

Google honors American artist Alexander Calder with a doodle that is made entirely in HTML5. Jered Wierzbicki was the software engineer who coded the doodle and said that he was inspired when he saw the artist’s exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Calder made art works out of ordinary materials like wire and scraps of sheet metal. HE molded them into forms and let motion and spaces do the rest. The engineer said that this abstractions struck him the most about Calder’s works.

The Alexander Calder doodle is the first one that was done with HTML5 canvas, which is a feature that lets dynamic rendering of two-dimension bitmaps. It simulates the physics on the mobile’s geometry and renders it in real-time 3D with vector graphics.

This is possible with the recent advancements in browser technology. The doodle works with accelerometers and shows the full capabilities of HTML5, which is slowly being unlocked. The dynamic doodle is good but not as addictive as the Gibson and Pac-Man doodles.

The doodle shows the rendering possibilities of HTML5 and this is a big blow to Flash. Google search is one of the most visited sites on the internet and the doodle will expose users to the HTML5 rendering. Apple has always been against Flash and now Google is using its replacement on its site, it looks like the end is near for Adobe’s software.

Google+ Regrets Move On Businesses

Two weeks ago. Google asked businesses not to make Google+ profiles because it is still setting up pages for businesses. At present, the search giant wants only real people on its social network. The company came out with what it has done so far and hopes to roll out the feature that would include nonprofits, companies, bands and other organizations into Google+ as soon as possible.

Google promised that it would be available later this year and has already started taking applications from o0rganizations that are interested to beta test the pages for businesses on Google+. The company was swamped with applications that it decided to speed up the process and roll out the feature really soon.

Google asked businesses that are currently in Google+ to switch from a company to a real person or the profile will be deleted. TechCrunch made a profile for a fake person named Techathew Cruncheri and Google deleted it. It also removed the profiles for Ford, Search Engine Land and Sesame Street.

Mashable had a page in Google+ and it transferred it in the name of its CEO Pete Cashmore. He already had a profile but he will ditch that to run the new personal page.

Google+ Grows But Remains A Minor Social Network

Google newest social network project, Google+, is still on its beta release but its user base is fast growing. But according to Hitwise, Facebook remains the top social network and Google+ still has a lot of ground to cover.

According to Hitwise, Google+ ranks 42 among social networking sites and took the 638th spot among the web sites in the United States in the week ending July 16. This is a big jump from the week ending July 9 when Google’s social network was ranked 2,404th of all the web sites in the United States.

You need to be invited by a current member of Google+ to be able to join the newest social network. The company designed its content-sharing and privacy features to attract people that are uncomfortable with Facebook’s privacy settings and policies.

Facebook seems unfazed by Google+’s growth. Its own growth is undiminished with more than 750 million members and the average users on the site continue to increase their amount of time on the site. Visits to Google+ is more than 1.8 million in the week ending July 16, which is up 283 percent compared to the previous week.

Most of the comments about Google+ have been positive so far. It is a sign that more people would join the social network once it opens up to the public.

New Samsung slider rumored for AT&T

Samsung AT&T Slider

Samsung seems to be pretty fond of Android sliders recently. After having one of its devices spotted as an unnamed slider device headed for Boost Mobile recently, the Korean OEM seems to have another slider up its sleeve, assuming what the folks over at BGR have reported is true. The blog recently got their hands on a phone render which is touted to be Samsung’s upcoming Android phone for AT&T.

The device which is said to be unnamed comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and will have a four-button Android layout instead of the usual three-button layout found on Samsung phones. One thing interesting about the phone is the addition of the four Android buttons found on the slide-out keyboard – it’s not something you see every day. The phone is scheduled to hit retail outlets within the next few months. Stay tuned for more details.

Booq Viper Slider case for the iPad 2 works with docks

Booq Viper Slider

While it’s usually a great idea to have protective cases for your iPad, one of the drawbacks to using one is the fact most cases usually make the tablet impossible to use with a dock. This is largely due to the design of the cut outs on the case itself or the fact that the case makes it too bulky to fit into a dock. Well the folks over at Booq have come up with a new iPad 2 case designed just to solve that problem.

Called the Viper Slider, the iPad 2 case has a specially designed bottom quarter that easily slides off (hence the name Slider), leaving the bottom of the iPad 2 compatible with almost any docking station available on the market. In addition to being dock-friendly, the Viper Slider protects your iPad 2 from the usual drops and mishaps with its durable polycarbonate casing and is said to give you a better grip when holding the tablet as well.

With sleek looks to match its functionality, the Booq Viper Slider sure looks like a useful case for the iPad 2. Folks will definitely enjoy the convenience it brings. It is available now for $39.95 from Booq and various retail outlets nationwide.

Judge Rejects Oracles Damage Claims Against Google

A federal judge ruled that Oracle’s report estimating damages of $6.1 billion in its lawsuit against Google is too much. Judge William Alsup gave Oracle a chance to change its estimate before the case goes to trial this fall. Aside from the amount of damage, he sided with Oracle on different sides regarding the case.

Oracle claims that Google’s Android mobile operating system was created via patent infringements of Java programming tools that Oracle acquired when it purchased Sun Microsystems last year. This is just one of the lawsuits that have been filed by tech companies over their share of profits from the emerging market for tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.

Judge Alsup said that Oracle’s expert, Boston University professor Iain Cockburn, overstretched when he used a broad estimate of Android’s value. The judge said that the expert should have used a portion of Android that have been tied to the Java patents to get the estimate of what Google has to pay regarding the case.

The judge added that Oracle might have made the report with the goal of seeing how much it could get from Google. He rebuked both sides for missteps during the hour-long hearing. Both companies didn’t want to talk about issue at the moment.

Google To Add New Functionality To Circles With Latest Acquisition

Google’s relentless march to the top of the social media mountain just got another boost with the announcement that they’ve acquired the start-up called Fridge. Google+

What is Fridge? Well, before Google came up with the idea of making it easier to segment your friends, Fridge had pioneered that functionality. The start-up created a social network that made it easy for you to organize your friends into groups, plan events and share photos. They got so good at it that they grew to a user base of 40,000.

With the acquisition, Google is clearly showing its desire to make Circles one of the cornerstones of Google+ and reports are that the Fridge team will hit the ground running as they work to make Circles better. At present, the “groups” functionality is lacking in Google+ so the expertise Fridge brings to the table will be might handy. Throw in “event planning” functionality and Google+ will be pretty much Facebook on steroids.

The rumors are flying that Google+ goes live to the public on the 31st July 2011, and whilst that may or may not be the case, it is clear Google wants the platform to be robust enough to live up to the hype. Expect more acquisitions to be announced since Google+ is not quite the juggernaut that Google is looking to build.

Watch the video below to see the really cool benefits of Google+ Circles.

Another Location Based Social Network from Yogyakarta

Dailysocial readers must know the local location based social services such as Yahoo! Koprol, Urbanesia, and Personaflag, for Yogya, beside Personaflag there is another location based social service called t4nya.com.

This one social media is quite interesting, has a slight difference from the others and a little bit unique. The first approach is mark a favorite location and then user can add photos, give score and comment to the place they’ve visited before, able to find places, location and new relations.

It’s quiet interesting from UI and UX side and also user friendly. The users have been given the privilege to add important places or their own favorite location on the map. It’s easy to add places and the funny icons display in each category made me comfortable in using t4nya.com. Even though it’s still in beta version, t4nya.com is such an addictive social service.

For users the registration process is very simple, you don’t need to fill in a registration form, simply login with your Facebook account. It’s also easy to add favorite places or important places with photos include in it, captions and comments on the site is very easy in t4nya.com. After the above process, users can also share their activities to Facebook and Twitter.

But when we visit t4nya.com there aren’t many people using this service yet. But some of the important or favorite places had already been add, especially in Yogyakarta, whether it’s a vacation spot, restaurant, and other places. Like other local service, t4nya.com also facilitate users to search or review places that their interested on.

When trying to add more places in t4nya.com, the process is quite simple. Giving name, give a description, giving a tag on a certain location, giving location a category and put a marker on a location. But the given category from the service is still limited. I try to add a place called HackerSpaceYK in t4nya.com, in just a matter of minutes. Unlike Yahoo! Koprol, a few months ago there was an ‘incident’ experienced by colleagues in Bandung. ;)

Too bad, currently t4nya.com can only be access from the web, right now the mobile web and mobile app is still under development. Just like their explanation in their official blog, t4nya.com needs all the critics and suggestion for their references so they can develop their service and fix all the bugs. For suggestion and critics can be send from their feedback form or comment in this article.

Eric Schmidt on the Asian mobile revolution

Google Thailand yesterday released an opinion piece from its Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt about his views on the mobile revolution in Asia, a region that relies more heavily on mobile activities and innovations more so than the tech powerhouse nations in North America, Australia, and Europe.

Published in full by Jon Russell on the Asian Correspondent website, here are some of the highlights of the piece.

Schmidt began his note by telling a story about an extortion attempt which is nothing special except that the extortionist uses an SMS to send the threats and includes his mobile payment account number to have the money transferred.

While in the US this would be akin to using a Paypal account to demand ransom, the fact that this system uses SMS instead of an app means it works with any mobile phone, not just smartphones.

He also notes how in Kenya people can buy weather insurance and receive payouts over SMS “if the rain doesn’t fall within a specified range.”

SMS-based financial services is something that he highlighted early and often, showing that the app environment is not necessary for a thriving mobile economy. While smartphones may offer a more robust and pleasant experience in performing mobile transactions, SMS-based activities still win out in most markets due to the blanket compatibility and ease of operation.

He ended his praise of Asia by saying that the resolution of conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand was done not via formal diplomatic discussions but through SMS.

Eric Schmidt will be in Bali this week for the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit between the 22nd and 24th, which will also be attended by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Vuclip: iPhone tops list of worldwide video consumption

At last night’s MobileMonday in Jakarta, Nickhil Jakatdar, co-founder and CEO of Vuclip flew down from the United States and presented some insights into mobile video consumption. Vuclip is a company that delivers mobile videos to any video-enabled device.

While it’s dwarfed by YouTube, Vuclip still delivers more than 350 million videos per month to more than 25 million viewers in 200 countries around the world. It’s primary markets include India, Saudi Arabia, United States, United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Mexico.

Jakatdar’s visit coincides with the release of Vuclip’s latest Global Video Insights report which the company makes available on a monthly basis. The report reveals that aside from a dip in February, the number of mobile video consumers have been on the rise this year.

Vuclip had delivered just over 200 million videos to mobile devices in January and in June that number had crossed 350 million, a 175 percent increase in six months. The number of viewers went from 18 million in January to over 25 million in June. That means the average number of video views per person had gone from around 11 per month to 14. In a single month, Vuclip delivers 750 terabytes of video.

Jakatdar remarked that by 2014, smartphones and other mobile devices will pass traditional computers as the primary devices in which consumers watch videos. Currently, the iPhone is the top device for watching video in Vuclip’s environment.

This corresponds to a report released in May 2011 by FreeWheel which discovers that 80% of mobile video consumption in the US happens on an iOS device with 30 percent each on iPhone and iPod touch and 20 percent on the iPad.

Vuclip’s report however only saw the iPhone’s rise in June overtaking the BlackBerry 9700 as the top mobile device to watch videos. Outside the United States, various BlackBerry models still dominate the top five devices followed by assorted Nokia phones.

Unfortunately Vuclip’s report does not say the proportion of videos consumed by each device, so there’s no information in terms of consumption share, although the report does say that the iPhone is the leader in Singapore, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates while BlackBerry leads in Canada, the UK, and Venezuela.

“July marks a major inflection point in the smartphone race,” he said. “While we know Apple is a media darling in North America and Europe, it’s interesting to see that it’s now become an increasingly popular smartphone in international markets in terms of mobile video consumption.”

He pointed out that there are four stakeholders in a video environment. Those are consumers, content providers, OEM, and advertisers, so anyone delivering mobile videos will need to consider those four factors.

He added that content providers can monetize through premium services such as movie or music video portals, video ringtones and video alerts. While delivering feature length video over mobile network is still a long way away especially in emerging markets, he said providers can work with movie distributors to deliver short clips from the movies for example.

In Indonesia, the top most watched videos belong to the entertainment category, followed by news, celebrities, music and sports.

Indowebster is Aiming at Legal Content

Indowebster known as the most popular providers of file storage in Indonesia will explore legal content to change the paradigm that has been attached. As talks between founder Indowebster, Juny “Acong” Maimun, and Vivanews, the first categories that will get a legal content is music and antivirus.

Later, for each musician, will be displayed two versions of the content, legal and illegal. Legal version is paid with good quality content, while the illegal version of course is not guaranteed the quality and authenticity. As for antivirus, Indowebster cooperate with Avira for antivirus subscription at an affordable price.

Acong, who previously was a hacker, theorized, “In the online world, the user should not be forced to buy. But how can they be willing to buy.” The provision of legal and illegal content simultaneously is unusual, but it can encourage users to slowly transform. In addition to content issues, Indowebster also relaunch its website since July 9 yesterday and planned to be full launch in August. You can access the new version of the site in http://v5.indowebster.com/.

I think many people on the Internet who feel that all content can be obtained for free, but the education is how to build an appreciation for intellectual property rights with personal awareness to pay for something that is worthy to be bought by users. I personally for example, already accustomed to appreciate some good work with developers by bought it because I think the work is worthy to be bought at a price that is displayed.

Currently Indowebster already have more than 1 million registered users with 60TB used capacity accommodated in 300 servers. Acong targeted the number will double within the next 1.5-2 years. File types that are accommodated in Indowebster vary from movies, music, photos, practically anything that can be downloaded and uploaded via the Internet. Until now Indowebster still claim 100% owned by Indonesia, despite many offers from foreign investment.

The thing that may still make Indowebster comfortable transforming slowly, rather than making rapid progress, is a regulation that is still gray and the less fierce association. In the United States itself, claims against providers of file-sharing services already consume a lot of “victims”. Call it the Napster and Limewire are both already forced to shut down. Even now there is an ongoing lawsuit against HotFile from Hollywood MPAA film association.

Things like this are like double edge sword. On the one hand, education of users is still very low, but on the other side of the government and associations [as copyright owners] do not seem to matter [in the positive sense] to promote awareness of intellectual property rights. Measures such as Indowebster service providers who started this educational initiative deserve our appreciation and support.

Sedapur Won Nokia Fellowship Award

E-commerce site specifically about food selling and purchase for small businesses, Sedapur.com, which was founded by Soegianto has won a Nokia Fellowship which is one of the award in the International Young Creative Entrepreneur 2011 in early July.

Soegianto entitled to IDR 200 million of development fund. This value is close to the number Sedapur needs listed in the business proposal for this event which is IDR 232,2 million. Soegianto’s daily work is a consultant in Information Technology.

Soegianto won over six other finalists after a rigorous selection selected from 227 registered applications. Interestingly, from the seven Nokia Fellowship finalists, Sedapur is already running and it’s the only tech startup. This is proof that tech startup can no longer be underestimated, both in terms of solutions offered by them and its execution. Seven selected finalists were also had the opportunity to get a business training on Basic Business Plan, Sales & Marketing, Taxes & Finance, Leadership, Operational Management and Presentation Techniques.

We have discussed about Sedapur which officially launched last May. We covered the initial design on November, they release alpha (limited tester) on January. Sedapur has a quite attractive display and has been covering around Greater Jakarta area. Sedapur open up opportunities for small food and beverages entrepreneurs; that have been perhaps difficult to sell his products to a wider area, to be able to develop its market online. Not only that; Sedapur help delivery solutions by providing reliable courier services.

According to the other Sedapur founder, Jacky Lokan, their focus is to connect the domestic industry in the field of food and beverages with the buyer, through the provision of services that provide added value to the product seller. It is born from the fact that many house wife with food products that have the potential sale value but was blocked by the problems in marketing, management of payment, and delivery.

Hopefully by obtaining the Nokia Fellowship, Sedapur can expand its service area to other areas in Indonesia and helping small business to harness the potential of online sales.

Interview With Founder of t4nya.com

Several days ago, DailySocial write an article about a location-based social networking from Yogyakarta that is t4nya.com. I tried to contact one of the four founders of t4nya.com via email, he is Yonathan Utomo.

Yonathan built T4nya.com together with his three friends who also founder, Andhri Hermawan Effendi (Web Developer), Widy Agung Priasmoro (Android Developer), and Waskito Adi (System Admin). They all build t4nya.com at first they met in a group on Facebook called PPP . Here’s a brief interview with one of the founders of t4nya.com, Yonathan Utomo:

DS: When was t4nya.com launched?

Development process on the web version began in September 2010. While the beta version (for web) since January 2011 (but only distributed to our own friends). We haven’t launch it officially.

DS: Why do you t4nya as a name?

Initially we chose PoI dipeta as the name. POI = Point of Interest, dipeta = the name of the company. POI is not a common knowledge for other people, so we chose a name that is easy to remember which can be directly demonstrated that the application is themed “places”. So we chose the name ‘tempatnya’. To be more interesting we made t4nya (read tempatnya in Indonesian, although some friends insist t4nya = tanya (question in english).

DS: Can you tell us a bit about the background story when you made t4nya.com?

The background is easier for people to share favorite/interesting places including information to others. Almost every day we hear questions containing the word “where”, asking the location of a place, for example: where we going to have lunch today, where is the location of A campus, etc.

To answer these questions we usually answer them orally, or if the instructions a bit complicated, we may draw a map. Well, it would be much better if there is a system which provides a map that can be accessed anytime and descriptions containing brief information about the place. These descriptions can be given by people who really understand the place (especially if it is a favorite spot). And people who want to know where it is can ask freely to people who know the venue information.

In addition, we also want to accommodate people who are happy sharing knowledge about a location/places of interest along with the photos associated with that place.

We expect an interaction between users (both in discussions about a place, photos, etc.), Maybe it will resemble a forum. Interaction can be done through each page and in t4nya.com, place on Facebook and Twitter (if you want to interact more personally with your friends).

DS: What makes t4nya.com unique compared to other location based startup? Maybe it’s the features?

We focus on the interaction and the information of interesting places, so we highlight more in the page of location/places photos. On every page people who want to know a place can ask freely to people who know the venue information. Either through the pages on t4nya.com or can share through the facilities in FB/Twitter if you want to ask your friends in FB/Twitter (you can also reply to more personal questions). In order for more convenient interactions, there is a notification feature that notifies users when there are others who respond to comments/questions on the page location/photo.

If a place does not exist, then the user can add them easily. For the web edition, users must include a photo of the place (could be buildings, logos, menus, or other photos who could represent the place). To cope with a double, user can not add a place which has the exact same name within a radius of 30 m. (The possibility of this system will be revised at a later date, to avoid multiple places). We also develop gaming systems on t4nya. Although there is gaming system in t4nya, we preferred interaction among our users.

Overall, t4nya.com is still under development. For the web edition is still in beta, while for the Android version, we plan to launch it shortly. The mobile web is under development. We are also available in Twitter, Plurk, Facebook Fanpage, Kaskus, and Google+. For these places we are looking for a suitable format (such as user interaction etc.). Importantly there is an interaction, not just info only.

DS: How many t4nya.com users right now?

We still have only a few users, mostly our own friends (from campus, family and friends in FB)

DS: How are you going to monetize t4nya.com?

We consider a few ways. The first is advertising. The landlord can advertise his place on the page location. They will be given additional features to promote the place. We are also developing a paid promo joint system, which will be integrated with t4nya.com, Tagtung.com, and Carialamat.com.

Business owners can promote their business on this promo system (pay), and his place of business will be listed in t4nya.com, Tagtung.com, and Carialamat.com. Our first main target is the small businesses (warung burjo, laundry etc. – local food place and local laundry service-ed). For Tagtung.com and Carialamat.com, the owner is Dwining Wahyudi (domicile Yogya) and Srex Setiawan (Jakarta domicile). Both of them is a member of PPP too.

DS: What obstacles are now being faced by t4nya.com?

Time sharing. We still have much to develop (mobile version, Android Apps, and some promo with features and systems). So much time is focused on marketing via social media (FB, Twitter, Plurk, etc) somewhat neglected (update only available when we have the chance).

DS: What is the next strategy for t4nya.com?

We will develop t4nya.com in all platforms (web, mobile web, web apps on Android, Blackberry, iPhone, WP) and bring t4nya.com in FB, Twitter, Plurk, and G+. But because we are a small team, then the development process will be step by step. We are also developing a system of joint promotion, which will be integrated with t4nya.com, Tagtung.com, and Carialamat.com. Promotion system is one of our monetization strategies.

Seeing the background of the founders of this startup, the spirit of their young lives is very strong, I hope their strong in spirit to survive in developing t4nya.com, sustainability in setting up a startup is a necessity, especially when it’s associated with the consumer, where the adaptation and introduction of services takes time. T4nya also has not been officially released and many development plans are being prepared by them.

While waiting for the various developments that will happen, there are some improvements in t4nya.com, such as the UX on the web so that new registered users can easily use t4nya.com. For now t4nya.com is developing a mobile app on the Android platform, possibly from readers curiosity about the mobile app from t4nya.com, I hope the UX in mobile app will also be easily understood by the users.

The thing that makes t4nya.com interesting is uplifting small businesses especially in Yogyakarta area like Warung Burjo, angkringan, laundry, etc to make them a pay promotional system. If many small business register to t4nya.com, users can find location more easily, wherever and whenever.

So, we wait for the next surprise from t4nya.com.

Thank you to Yoga Hanggara for introducing me to Yonathan.

Google Confirms Their Plan for Indonesian Office

Google finally confirm that they’re opening their office in Indonesia before 2012. Stated by Chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt during his meeting with Indonesia’s VP Boediono in Jakarta. Vice President’s spokesman Yopie Hidayat, as quoted by Kompas, explained that Google would like to develop their business by  leveraging small medium enterprises from Indonesia with foreign buyers like what Google did in China. For Google, this is a stretegic step to support their advertising business.

After this meeting, Google’s representatives will work together with Ministry of Communications and Informatics in order to build an MOU as a base for Google’s operations in Indonesia. Several high-positioned Googlers from US has been visiting Indonesia for the past few months to meet with local politicians and discussing on operation-related matters.

There has been rumors about Google opening their office in Indonesia after Singapore and Malaysia last January, and after Indonesia it is also rumored that Google’s heading to Thailand. We also did a post on why companies like Google doesn’t really need to setup their office in Indonesia, but it’s always fun to see Google’s office in downtown Jakarta.

My guess is that Google Indonesia’s office will focus on their advertising business on their AdSense and AdWords platform, and of course they’ll be needing lots of Sales and Marketing resources. I’m guessing they won’t be needing much engineers here because their localized products already run well even without them being in Indonesia, such as Google Voice Search in Indonesian language. In the mean time, Google Indonesia consists of a few people working remotely from their homes and reporting to Google Singapore office.

CEO Corner : Mike McCue from Flipboard Talks About iPad and Asian Market

We haven’t update the CEO Corner for quite a while, but now we’re back with an interview with Mike McCue. Mike is the CEO and co-founder of Flipboard, a news reader for the iPad. McCue and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll founded the company in January 2010 with Silicon Valley power-investors backing them up.

In this interview, Mike will give his insights on why he believed and put a big bet on the iPad, and of course how does Flipboard see Asia as a potential market. After all, the iPad has been a success in the region.

Here’s our interview with Mike  :

Hi Mike, can you describe a bit to our reader about Flipboard?

Flipboard is the world’s first social magazine. Inspired by the beauty and ease of print media, Flipboard’s mission is to fundamentally improve how people discover, view and share content across their social networks. The company’s goal is to bring everything that matters to a person together in one place.

Flipboard provides an entirely new experience of social content and news on the Web. Instead of scrolling down a stream or timeline and lets users read what the people that matter to them are sharing like a magazine. Instead of linking to a Web browser content is re-formatted and contained within one beautiful, continuous experience.

Readers can create their own sections in Flipboard based on content from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other sources and quickly flip through the latest stories, photos and updates from friends and trusted sources.

Flipboard is one of the hottest companies in the Valley. How did you get here? What’s the story behind Flipboard?

We definitely were excited about launching Flipboard to the public one year ago, but we had no idea that it would be so popular so fast. We expected to have a slower build up that would give us time to get more feedback and expand more slowly. That said, we were thrilled at the response and the feedback from Flipboard users has been fantastic.

Why Flipboard is so successful probably differs based on the user, but one thought is that we bring together three things people love, their social media, fast access to the amazing content shared around the Web and an experience that was designed for the iPad. Ultimately, like at many start-ups, Flipboard’s philosophy is that the most important thing is to build a useful, beautiful and enjoyable product. We believe that if we have a great product, we’ll be able to build a great company. We spent many months before launch developing Flipboard, so that when people first got this product, they’d have an aha-moment.

Obviously, you’re putting a big bet on the iPad. Why do you believe in the iPad? Any specific reasons for choosing the iPad as your main platform?

The iPad is creating a new format for reading content. We first started thinking about Flipboard before the iPad existed and originally we thought we’d create a product for the Web. When Apple’s iPad came out, we realized it’s the perfect format for Flipboard; for a social magazine.

However, we see the iPad as a starting point and we definitely want to take Flipboard to other devices and platforms over time. Because we have invested in the iOS the next platform we’ll take Flipboard to is the iPhone.

Just like on the iPad, we want to embrace the special features and form factor of each device. We put a lot of thought into what Flipboard would look like on other devices.

The iPad is a lean-back experience. We see that people read Flipboard most in the evening. On an iPhone, on the other hand, it would be different: it’s a lean-forward experience. We have to think about what can we relay in 15 seconds, and still feel like Flipboard.

As Android comes to market on tablets and we start to see one or two emerge as the leaders for Android, we will look at how we might embrace that platform as well.

iPads are huge in Asia (including Jakarta too), and there’s a large market for other mobile & tablet devices as well. Do you have specific marketing plans for Asia? How do you see Flipboard’s positioning in Asia?

Asia is an important market for us. We already see a lot of people in Asian countries using Flipboard today. Since you can add any source to create your own magazine, Flipboard can be in anyone’s native language. We are still developing our international strategy – in the coming year, we will take our first steps into markets outside of the U.S. and start localizing our product and partnerships.

You’ve probably heard this a lot, but are you guys planning to support other platforms? (I hear Android tablets are doing pretty well.)

See answer to question 3

You’ve been a successful serial entrepreneur in the tech area, what advice do you have for entrepreneurs in emerging markets?

First, build something you are truly passionate about… your users will see that passion shine through in the product itself and you will be driven for years to come through all the inevitable ups and downs.

Second, recruit a professional designer who is proven at building great user experiences. I’ve never met anyone who was both a great designer and a great developer and to win large numbers of users your app needs to be both beautifully designed and well built.

Third, less is more. We deleted more code than we shipped for Flipboard 1.0. It’s OK to ship a small subset of your ideal feature set but the resulting product should capture the core essence of your vision and be inherently useful. Finding this balance is tricky so don’t be afraid to iterate until you get it right and you know people are going to LOVE your first release.

——

Thanks Mike, Dian and Christel from Flipboard for this interview! ;)

Google Shuts Down Google Labs

Google closes its Google Labs in the efforts of streamlining and simplifying its products. This was announced by the company through its official blog. This is part of the company’s efforts to refocus its efforts on its products. This is one of its CEO Larry Page’s goals when he got the position.

The company learned a lot of things by launching early prototypes of products through Google Labs. By refocusing the company, it could make the most out of the opportunities available. By closing down the Labs, it would end all the experiments. The company has incorporated some of the Labs products and technologies into various product areas. Lab products that are available as Android apps will still be available on the Android Market.

Google Labs has been the company’s testing ground for its new products and features added to existing Google services and products such as Gmail, Google Wave, and Google Calendar. Testing on the Google Labs was by invitation only. It was the process that Google implemented when it initially rolled out its Google+ social network last June.

Google once said advertised Google Labs as the playground where its more adventurous users can play with prototypes of products and give feedback to the engineers who developed the programs and services.

Speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con, Steven Spielberg has revealed that Jurassic Park 4 has a writer, and is in development

Producer-director Steven Spielberg, arguably one of the filmdom's visionaries with the Midas touch, is ready to proceed with a “Jursassic Park 4,” with a release date over the next two years.

The wait is a mere flicker of an instant in time compared to how long it took the dinosaurs to come back to earth, but then, when you've got a beloved franchise like "Jurassic Park," fans tend to get antsy.

However, the word around Comic Con is clear: Spielberg announced that Jurassic Park 4 is definitely in the works, likely to hit in 2013 or 2014 and will be in 3D. Any more details? No. Just that table scrap,

Google Search Alerts Users About Malware

Google will start alerting users when malware is found in their systems. It would warn the users through search results. This new service is designed to give users an additional later of security. It is not meant to be a replacement of antivirus software but it could be an essential feature for people who don’t take malware seriously.

This is the first time that Google implemented security features outside of its Chrome browser and Android Market. The warnings in the search results could be useful in some degree but the users are still responsible for the safety of their computers.

Google said that it could only detect malware that have already affected the machine. It could not prevent viruses from infecting the system. You still need antivirus software to clean the system. People who ignore computer security will benefit from this new service from Google.

Google detected a certain malware by noting unusual patterns of activity in search traffic when performing routine maintenance of its data centers. It determined that the computers that showed odd behavior were infected with a certain type of malicious software that causes computers to send traffic to Google via a number of proxy servers. A warning will be displayed on top of the users’ search results if their computer is infected.

Apple seeds iOS 5 beta 4 as an OTA update

iOS 5 beta 4It looks like we’re getting closer to the imminent release date of iOS 5. The latest beta of the operating system (beta 4) has been pushed out to developers and for the first time in the history of iOS it updates without the use of a computer. Previously users needed to update their iOS devices by downloading the latest firmware onto their computers and then plugging their device in to update it. iOS 5 is going to cut the cord and make use of over the air updates instead, and now they’ve finally started to implement it.

In addition to the OTA update, iOS 5 brings WiFi sync as well, again removing the need for a cord when syncing their devices with iTunes. iOS 5 is said to be arriving this fall, and each beta brings us one step closer to its release date. With features like iMessage, iCloud integration, wireless sync and OTA updates – it’s one update that many users are looking forward to.

Next iPhone coming to US on September 5th?

iPhone 5

Is the iPhone arriving in September 5th? According to the latest rumors published by iPhoneItalia, it received news from a “very reliable source” who claims that the next iPhone will be launched on Swisscom’s network in October 5th. Now that’s not the whole story. Apparently the October 5th date is the “rest of the world” date: one month after the US release date which is said to be September 5th. The source of this news? A senior executive at Swisscom (a Swedish carrier).

It’s hard to separate truth from fiction here, but if it’s true, this is the first time we have a definite date for the next iPhone’s release. It lines up nicely with all the previous rumors we’ve heard so far about a September release date (unfortunately in this case it isn’t global). The source also never mentioned if it was going to be the iPhone 5 or 4S (neither of which are confirmed at the moment either). With September a little more than a month away, we should expect some sort of announcement soon if the September 5th release date is to be believed. What do you think?

Youtube And Other Top Video Sharing Sites Suffer Huge Drop In Visitors

It’s fair to say that video sharing sites like Youtube, must not like the summer months.

According to marketing insights company, Nielsen, video sharing sites took a hit in terms of unique visitors starting June. One of the biggest losers was Youtube, who saw a 3 percent drop in month-on-month numbers leading up to the June period.

Youtube VisitorsAccording to Nielsen, who also conducted studies into the numbers of other major video sharing sites, the drop in visitors is directly attributed to the summer. Across the US, schools break for the summer holidays, and since the bulk of the video viewing population are of school age, the correlation is not unfounded.

The only video sharing site that saw an increase in visitors was the College Humour network, which saw an increase of 23.2 percent in unique visitors. Still, sites like Youtube can take comfort in the fact that the drop in numbers is entirely seasonal, and doesn’t reflect any structural change in how its visitors see the site. Indeed, the Nielsen study, as well as data collated by Experian HitWise, show that Youtube is still, the biggest player in the video sharing arena. Youtube is particularly popular in the UK, accounting for 1-in-5 visits among internet users in that country. What’s more, Youtube is the fastest growing social network in the UK.

With soaring temperatures raging across the US, more and more people will abandon the comforts of the house for the great outdoors. This might add to the declining video viewership, but things should pick up again after the summer, so the likes of Youtube shouldn’t be too worried.

Yelp Disappears From Google SERPS: Love Affair Over?

If you like reading a review or two before you head out to a local restaurant, you may find that Yelp is not your first port of call anymore—at least not sourced through Google. Google has decided not to serve (pardon the pun) Yelp review pages in its SERPS, preferring instead to serve its own Google Places listings. Yelp

At first glance this might seem like bad news for people looking for reviews, but as Alexis Madrigal of The Atlantic points out, Yelp has started to serve crap in its reviews. According to Madrigal, gleaming anything useful from Yelp reviews, require an advanced degree in Psychology (my paraphrase).

Whatever the reality of Yelp reviews, however, you’ll no longer be able to access them at the top of Google’s search results. From now one, a quick glance at what other have to say about restaurant Y, will have to be conducted from within Google Places.  The listings within Google Places are pretty much mirrors of the businesses reviewed in Yelp, so would-be review seekers shouldn’t lose out too much. The big question is whether or not Google will be able to replace Yelp reviews, with something useful and spam-free.

For now, it seems the love affair between Yelp and Google is over or at least on the back-burner. Yelp of course will feel slightly spurned, but with its loyal following, particularly those on smartphones, it should stay afloat.

Watch the video below to see how Yelp can help you track down the best local businesses.

Google Refocuses On Products

Google CEO Larry Page is refocusing his company towards its products. He also wants to implement a start-up philosophy. At present, the company’s employee number swelled up to over 28,000 across the world.

Larry Page founded the company together with Sergey Brin in 1998. He replaced Eric Schmidt as CEO in April that ends the triumvirate management structure that some analysts said is slowing down the company.

Google’s Chrome browser has 160 million users and 550,000 Android devices are being activated each day. Google earns its profits from searches from Android devices but it invests in a lot of products such as Google Wallet, Google Offers, Google Payments, and others.

Google started hiring high-quality engineering people and its first half attrition rate is its lowest ever. The company raised its employee’s salary by 10 percent. In the first three months of the year, at least 600,000 people have already applied for jobs in the company.

There are people questioning Google’s tax payments and the company said that it pays its taxes in every jurisdiction to the full extent of the law. Google’s effective tax rate in the second quarter of the year is 19 percent according to its recent earning report.

To my mind, it should have been done long time ago.

Google Plans To Stomp On Facebook With Its Google+ Games Platform

No social network is complete without the full integration of games; and not just any game—we’re talking the sort of games that can set off a viral frenzy. Google Games

Given this inherent requirement, it’s no surprise that Google is laying plans to launch its own gaming platform on Google+. The prevailing rumor is that the platform will make Facebook look like child’s play. According to reports, Google plans to make its platform more developer and user friendly. The incentive for developers is reported to be very solid, with Google planning to give each developer, the lions-share of any application downloads—more than 70%. This move will no doubt entice developers to “develop for Google+” over Facebook.

Google plans a full frontal assault on usability too. According to Tricia Duryee of AllThingsD, the gaming platform will run on Google’s Client technology. In a nutshell this means games will be run directly inside the chrome browser, without the need for installing pesky plugins. This of course is where the speed and ease of use comes in, and if things develop according to plan, users will be very happy indeed.

Already, Google has got on board some of the top developers in the social-gaming sphere, including the people behind “Angry Birds”. I expect more top developers to jump on the Google+ gravy train, so idea of Google+ posing a legitimate threat to Facebook might not seem far-fetched after all. Time will tell.

Are you a fan of gaming while hanging out on social networks? Watch the video below to see some analysis of Google next move.

eBay Increases Forecast After Strong Showing In Second Quarter

eBay’s second quarter revenue increased 25 percent and this made the company raise its full year forecast. Its marketplace division increased its revenue by 19 percent, which is a result of fee changes and new technology it implemented last year. Total number of merchandise volume went up and marked a full year of straight quarterly increases.

CEO John Donahue said that the result outdone the goals of his company’s growth plan that was made six months ago. It would raise the sales to $15 billion in 2013. The company capitalized on blurring the lines between offline and online retail service through its mobile shopping apps and PayPal online payments. Because of this, mobile payment volume has exceeded $3 billion in 2011.

The company’s growth comes as eBay tried to retool its business model to include the demands of mobile users and sellers. EBay’s U. S. marketplace has underperformed even if it accounts for 40 percent of the total merchandise volume.

EBay plans to launch a new marketing campaign at the end of the third quarter. This would include television ads, which would be the first time in four years. The campaign would try to build the brand and attract customers back to the marketplace.

Amazon Launches Kindle Textbook Rental Program

Amazon announced that it has a new Kindle textbook rental program for college students. This is another reason why consumers should not walk into another brick-and-mortar bookstore to buy books. The announcement came out the same day Borders bookstores said that it has filed for bankruptcy. The bookstore chain blamed the changing book industry as well as the economy.

A poll made last October showed that 63 percent believed that ebook readers have decreased the profits of print books while 22 percent of book sellers believed that ebook readers decreased their sales. 70 percent of those surveyed said that ebook readers would affect the sale of new books than used books.

Amazon’s new textbook rental program lets the students save all the notes and highlighted contents from a rented book and access them in the future. Online book sellers view textbook rental companies as their fierce competitors.

Barnes & Noble said that it is struggling to survive as consumers buy three digital books for every physical book. This is the reason why the company is trying to reinvent itself into a vendor of book downloads, reading apps and devices. Every retailer is faced with the same problem and they have to adjust to the changing technology in order to survive.

Sale Of MyYearbook Turns 21 Year Old Into A Millionaire

Whoever says that there’s no more money to be made from start-ups obviously hasn’t heard about Catherine Cook. The 21 year old has just joined the ranks of young, hip millionaires with the sale of MyYearbook, the online version of a school year book. MyYearbook Sold For $100 Million

What’s fascinating is the story of how Catherine and her brother became millionaires. Just 6 years ago, Catherine was a wide-eyed teenager with a vision for creating a digital version of her school year book. With vision in hand, Catherine along with her brother David (then 16), got to work and started the website. Venture capitalists like the idea, got on board and contributed $20m in funding, and in the 6 years that followed, MyYearbook grew to 20 million users.

MyYearbook presently gets over 1.2 billion monthly page views. And the popularity of the site was sufficient enough to attract the eye of Spanish social networking giant, Quepasa. The announcement of a whopping $100m acquisition for MyYearbook means that young Catherine and David are now internet millionaires. Not bad for 6 years’ worth of work.

This fascinating piece of news helps to highlight the renaissance of tech, and more importantly the importance of social media in leading this renaissance.  MyYearbook is probably not the last acquisition you’ll see in the social networking arena, and as companies like Google join the mix, a lot more millionaires are surely in the making.

Watch the video below to learn more about Catherine and the fantastic MyYearbook story.

Judge Gives Deadline Regarding Google Books

A judge gave Google two more months to come up with a digital library that doesn’t violate any copyright law. Google Books is under fire with complaints of infringement from authors and publishers. Judge Denny Chin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit set the deadline on September 15, which will be the date for the next hearing.

During that time, the judge wants Google to present a way that would reward book authors and publishers for reprinting parts of the content online. The parties have been trying to work on a deal since 2005.

Judge Chin said that if the matter is not resolved on September 15, then he will take it to himself to find a solution for the issue. He first heard the case in 2009 when he was still a district judge for New York and he kept the case even after he was promoted to the federal appeals court in 2010.

In 2005, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers filed a lawsuit against Google Books and Google eBooks. Then in October 2008, Google said it would pay $125 million to settle the lawsuit. There were several parties who opposed the settlement and argued that the search giant was still violating copyright law.

Google Adds Brand New Button To Circles Toolbar & Puts Circle-Building On Steroids

Google+ is now sitting at an estimated 18 million users, but even with such phenomenal growth, Google is not satisfied. Only complete world domination will do it seems, and so in an effort to take over the world, a new button has been added to the Circles toolbar.

Google+ Address Book Uploader

This magical button makes adding people to your circles super easy—and super-fast. Now with just a few clicks of your mouse, you upload entire address books. Those few hundred or so people you have stored in Outlook or Thunderbird just became useful. This new button adds additional oomph to the process of building circles, since the ability to upload from Hotmail and Yahoo are already present.

The upload feature from an address book is also very intuitive, allowing you to drag and drop friends into the circles you desire. It’ll even filter those contacts already added into circles from other sources such as Hotmail.

Only a button that lets you upload contacts from Facebook stands between Google+ and total world social media domination. And with Facebook very anxious of the growth of Google+, I don’t expect to see such a button—ever! Facebook has so far thwarted all efforts to let users export their contacts, and I expect that policy to remain extant.

Facebook effort aside though, we can expect Google+ to grow an even greater rate with this new feature.

Watch the video below to see more on the address book uploader.

Amazon Gets Go Signal To Collect Signatures Against Tax Measure

Amazon.com wants the so-called Amazon Tax Law repealed. It doesn’t want to collect sales tax from California residents because it doesn’t have a physical store in the state. The California Retailers Association, which includes Wal-Mart, the Gap and Target, has put together a war chest that the group will use to counter Amazon’s efforts.

The group said that without the tax fairness, more stores could close for good. According to them, consumers would go to retail stores and look at the merchandise and go home to buy them online because they don’t have to pay taxes.

If Amazon manages to get more than 504,000 voter signatures by September 27, then the new sales tax law will be placed on hold until California voters can vote on it next year. The online retailer’s strategy is to show the new tax law as a job killer.

Other online retailers are siding with Amazon and hopes that the voters see how the Amazon tax law will affect the economy. There are around 25,000 Amazon affiliates from California who were removed so that the company could avoid collecting sales tax.

The brick-and-mortar stores want the voters to realize that the Amazon tax law is not a new tax. It is just something to cover the sales tax that was not collected from online purchases.

Yahoo Records Dip In Advertising Sales: Trouble On The Horizon?

Yahoo lost traction years ago in the battle for search dominance, but they’ve been quietly eking out a living in their corner of the web—until now. yahoo weak sales

Yahoo has recorded losses for the second quarter running, reporting $1.08bn in revenue for the 3 months ending June 2011.According to Yahoo, that’s a 4.6% decline on last year’s revenues. The company is citing reduced advertiser spending as the major cause of the dip.

Of course Yahoo won’t openly say that eroding market share is a contributor because that would make Google and Facebook all the merrier. The truth is though, between lower consumer spending, advertiser migration (especially to social media platforms), Yahoo has taken a big hit. One also has to bear in mind that there was merger between Microsoft’s, Bing and Yahoo not too long ago. That consolidation, obviously didn’t transform the market has everyone expected.

Things aren’t looking too bad for Yahoo though, because even with only $1.08bn in revenue, the company did manage to make a profit. And that’s a lot more than some of the bigger tech companies can say. Those profits should now be guarded and channelled properly because if sales continue to decline, Yahoo will most certainly move from the black into the pits of the red.

Do you think Yahoo can keep up with the likes of Facebook and Google? Watch the video below to see what the analysts are saying.

Google+ Tries To Lure In Celebrities

In the hopes of attracting more users, Google+ is said to be planning on bringing big names from Hollywood to sign up with the social network. This is its next move in order to lure people away from Facebook.

Google is said to be working on a celebrity acquisition plan that would help spread the word about the Google+ social network to attract more new users. While the growth rate of the user base is fast, Google doesn’t want it to stop.

At the planning stage, Google is identifying the celebrities who are already part of its new social network. It hopes to keep imposters from taking the identities of famous people. This is according to Hollywood consultant Brett Schulte during an interview with CNN.

He added that he spoke with the search giant about the issue and Google might come up with a button or seal of approval for profiles that are proven to belong to a well-known person. Google is still thinking how to verify the identification of the celebrities but it is possible that the company would require a faxed copy of the person’s driver’s license.

Google didn’t want to comment on the topic but it maintains that there are more stuff in stored for its new social network project.
