Event Report: Bancakan 9th Meetup

Last Friday on August 19th 2011, startup and developer community in Yogyakarta, Bancakan 2.0 held the 9th meetup and Iftar dinner. The event ran well. Although the theme seems random, the speakers presented at the event are so interesting.

As reported in DailySocial several days ago, this event presented Anggit Tut Pinilih (MbakDiskon founder), Guntur Sarwohadi (Soybeansoft founder and CEO), also Saga Iqranegara and two other founders from JogjaHub, geek database in Yogyakarta.

The first speaker was Anggit. She explained about how MbakDiskon established and the concept which differentiates MbakDiskon with other daily deals, insight about local business in Yogyakarta, and some other unique ways to add the number of users of MbakDiskon.

This daily deals started with Anggit’s concern on online business, then she wanted to build a daily deals in Yogyakarta. As common, the target of daily deals target is to grab costumers, both merchants and users. What makes MbakDiskon different from other daily deals? It is about the quota for each deal. The development of business in Yogyakarta is quite rapid. There is new brand emerging every month. That makes daily deals service take a chance into the business.

The next speaker was Guntur Sarwohadi, SoybeanSoft founder and CEO, a company which is recently got investment from East Ventures. Guntur shared his experience on this investment process.

SoybeanSoft was established in 2007, which only developed flash game. Until now, it has produced 10 games in flash platform. The change occurred in January 2011, Guntur released a successful game named SkyFyrell as one of SoybeanSoft game in flash platform. After releasing the game, he wanted to change to mobile game and social market.

At the Bancakan first anniversary last February, Guntur met a guy from East Ventures. In March, he sent proposal and pitched to all East Venture investor. Then in April, SoybeanSoft got investment from East Ventures. In May, a social platform game, Hunter story started to develop and change the name into PT Sakti Osadha Yoga (SOY) for legal matter.

In this event, Guntur also gave some tips how to pitch in front of the investor. Some of them are the slides should be interesting, you should explain your startup in brief and close the presentation strongly. You can check this tips on this link.

The last speakers were two speakers from JogjaHub, Saga and Pranowo. They are co-founders of JogjaHub. Pranowo explained why they choose Yogyakarta to start JogjaHub in Yogyakarta. The reason is that Yogyakarta as a student city has a lot of geeks living in it. Unfortunately, their existence is still under recognition. Therefore, they created JogjaHub.

JogjaHub vision is to gather IT talents in Yogyakarta under the same umbrella for any IT community in Yogyakarta to build digital creative business in Yogyakarta. The advantage is to make wider link, to improve the knowledge, business access and capital, to get closer to all chances.

Saga also explained that one of web development studio in Bandung has contacted him to build BandungHub. If there are many similar requests from other cities, they may be will make NusantaraHub to gather all of them. Rizqi, one of the JogjaHub founder in question and answer session explained that they may make it like LinkedIn or Odesk.

As explained previously, this Bancakan meetup has a random topics, but all speakers do great presentations. The presentations can give solution and inspiration for Indonesian startups especially in Yogyakarta. Go Yogyakarta startups!

Gilt Groupe Says F-Commerce Stands for Flash Sales and Facebook

Gilt Groupe, an e-commerce and flash sales site, is experimenting with selling items from a range of categories — on Facebook.

The New York-based company said Facebook users will be able to go to a special page on Facebook, where they can log in using their regular account information to browse items and check out.

The site will officially launch on Monday, featuring items from women’s, men’s, children’s and home.

Other retailers have dabbled in F-Commerce, which is short for Facebook Commerce. But with most experiments today, it’s not much different from shopping on the Web. Unlike how users pay for items in games or buy movies on the social network, retailers don’t have to use Facebook Credits, which would require giving Facebook a 30 percent chunk of the transaction.

A spokesperson confirmed it was not using Facebook Credits and said that the platform was built in-house.

In a release, Gilt explained that it will offer products on the Facebook page that will not be available on its regular site. For example, Gilt Man will launch its first sale with a themed event called Man About Town featuring clothing, shoes, and accessories, and Gilt Home will offer a Vera Wang Home sale that will be available first on Facebook and then later on Gilt. Gilt Children will also have exclusives from Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, including a 1.5-foot tall Lego model.

After Pushing webOS Off a Cliff, HP Watches Its Stock Take a Deep Dive

What a difference a day makes.

In the 24 hours since Hewlett-Packard announced it was cutting production of its high-profile webOS mobile devices and might spin off its huge consumer PC business, stock of the tech giant has plummeted 20 percent.

HP shares are down $5.91 right now, at $23.60, one of the worst dives in its long history.

The reason? Wall Street is confused at what HP management and its board are up to.

So is everyone else, so get in line!

In any case, the one-fifth drop in value might be due to the length of time HP said it would take to execute its dramatically announced new plans. That is likely to keep the stock depressed, as investors are still uncertain what it all means.

One thing was clear: HP’s financial prospects are certainly dicey. Even as the Palo Alto, Calif., company announced its major strategic shift, it reported disastrous third-quarter earnings, included lowering its full-year forecast once again.

Warner Music Group Gets a New Boss

He replaces Edgar Bronfman Jr., who has run Warner Music Group since 2004, but will remain with the company as chairman of its board.

The company also announced that it is bringing Thomas Lee back to the company’s board. Lee had previously served as a board member from 2004 through this year, when his private equity company held a large stake in the music label. His reappointment does not mean he’ll be reinvesting in the company, I’m told.

People inside the company hold out the possibility that Bronfman could return to day-to-day leadership of the company if it succeeds in buying EMI Music, a longtime would-be merger partner currently owned by Citigroup. But even if Warner wins that bidding round, regulatory approval could take a year or more, so it’s not realistic to expect him back sooner than that, if ever.

Here’s Bronfman’s internal note to his employees, followed by the press release announcing the moves.

Dear Colleagues:

As Warner Music Group begins its next chapter, well-positioned for some truly exciting and unprecedented opportunities, I am pleased to announce we are adding a new member to our management team: Steve Cooper. Effective today, Steve will be serving as WMG’s Chief Executive Officer, working out of our New York office and I will serve as Chairman of the Board of WMG, continuing to work out of both our New York and London offices. Lyor and Cameron will remain in their positions, heading up Recorded Music and Music Publishing respectively, reporting directly to Steve.

I’d like to take a moment to explain to you the rationale behind this change:

Capitalizing on the opportunities before us will require an intensive and all-consuming effort from a broad and deep management team. For this reason, following the close of the sale and the transition of WMG from a public company to a subsidiary of Access Industries, in several discussions with Len and the Access team, I conveyed my strong conviction that my energies on behalf of the company would best be directed toward transformative transactions and long-term strategy. Len was supportive of my wishes provided we could identify the executive to whom I could hand off day-to-day management responsibilities. Fortunately, in Steve Cooper we have that executive.

Steve has a long and distinguished career of service to many companies. Having worked very closely with him over the past several months, I can tell you that he is a highly effective operator who brings a wide range of skills and experience to WMG, most recently, of course, as WMG’s Chairman. And, as a longtime partner to Len, Steve knows the Access team well and will be an effective liaison between them and WMG. More information about Steve’s background can be found in the press release we are issuing today.

Now, a few thank yous are in order. First of all, I want to thank Len and Access for being amenable to my kicking myself upstairs and understanding that I came to WMG as both an investor and operator—a dual role in which I have served throughout my career. After leading the acquisition from Time Warner, transforming the company, and selling it to Access, I believe I can add greater value by addressing the challenges WMG faces on a macro scale, while handing over the day-to-day reins to Steve.

Second, I want to thank Steve for being willing to swap roles with me. After collaborating so well with him, and sensing the energy and enthusiasm he brings to operating a company, I had no doubt that Steve was serving in the role that was more natural for me at this stage in my WMG tenure, while I was in the role in which Steve could bring to bear his many talents.

But the biggest thank you I’ve saved for last. And that’s to all our amazing employees around the world. Thank you. In transforming WMG, together we’ve performed something of a miracle. Despite the industry’s complex transition and the global economic downturn, we have grown profitability, improved our competitive position, and developed new business models, all while continuing to focus intensely on our core mission: artist development. Apple Takes a Key Tracking Tool Away From Developers

Apple is making a key change in the way developers and other third parties interact with the company’s mobile users. The company is taking away access to the “unique device identifier” associated with every iPad and iPhone. As Techcrunch notes, the change will be particularly meaningful for ad and game networks that used the UDIDs to track user behavior. It’s also worth noting that Apple has announced big changes in its developer policies before, and then backed down, to at least some degree, after public outcry.

Bye Bye, Babes! Maxim’s iPad App Bows Out.

Tablet magazine app launches still get plenty of attention, so it seems only fair to note when one disappears: Maxim HD, an iPad-specific version of the baberific print magazine, has called it quits, less than a year after launch.

A message which went up this month on the app’s iTunes page says its last issue was June, and directs users to try an older version of the app, which works on both iPads and iPhones. (Thanks to reader Steve Anderson for flagging.)

It’s not unusual for developers to abandon apps, of course. But this may be the first instance I’ve seen of a publisher bailing on an iPad-specific app. This spring, Condé Nast went the other way and dropped three magazine’s iPhone apps produced in-house in order to concentrate on iPad versions built on Adobe’s tablet publishing platform.

The advantage of an iPad-specific app is that it can be built to take advantage of the machine’s specific assets, the most obvious being its larger screen size. App developers have also used the platform as an opportunity to try super-sizing their pricing, and often charge more for an iPad app than one that works on the iPhone.

In this case, though, Maxim publisher Alpha Media is bucking the trend: It sold HD versions of its magazine for $3.99 a pop, but the remaining app goes for $2.99 a copy.

Microsoft Pledges Free Phones and More to webOS Devs Who Switch to Windows Phone

Wasting no time, Microsoft’s Windows Phone team is making a standing offer to those writing code for HP’s webOS: Develop for us instead.

In a message on Twitter, Microsoft developer evangelism team head Brandon Watson pledged all manner of support to any programmers who make the switch.

“To Any Published WebOS Devs: We’ll give you what you need to be successful on #WindowsPhone, incl.free phones, dev tools, and training, etc.,” Watson said in a tweet late on Friday, a day after Hewlett-Packard announced its plans to discontinue developing webOS-based hardware, such as the Pre phone and TouchPad tablet.

HP has said it is exploring options for webOS as a software platform and has indicated being open to all options, but it is not clear how many viable options it has.

Mission Motors Closes a Round of Funding

San Francisco-based Mission Motors holds a land speed record for an electric motorcycle and, as of this week, also holds a $9.3 million Series B round of funding to commercialize that bike — or at least parts of it.

Sadly, CEO Jit Bhattacharya informed me his company won’t be using the cash to make more of its achingly fast electric motorcycles.

But, even if the bike remains a rarity, the funding is real enough.

The round, led by Warburg Pincus, also includes a hefty line of credit to the company — a provision that makes sense when you realize how capital intensive the real next step will be.

That’s because Mission Motors is moving to become a supplier of electrical drive systems to vehicle makers — “OEMs” in industry speak.

Specifically, it is “looking at [applications] where size and weight are a factor,” said Bhattacharya.

So what does that mean exactly?

An electric drive system, at its most basic, is made up of three components: Batteries to store power, a motor to convert the electricity to physical motion and a speed controller that governs how fast it all happens.

Mission Motors isn’t doing game-changing battery research. Nor is it inventing a fundamentally new kind of motor.

In essence, Mission’s team is not unlike an uber-geeky group of high school car nuts — spending time and money trying to squeeze a little more performance out of a bunch of off-the-shelf parts.

This game of inches gets especially important when you are trying to shoehorn an electric drive system into tiny places.

Bhattacharya mentioned applications like small hybrids, where designers must fit an internal combustion engine, an electric motor and a battery package in the same car.

“If you drop the weight of the components, you basically improve the range,” he said.

So, where will we see a Mission Motors power system next?

Bhattacharya wouldn’t say, although the company has already worked with Honda on prototype cars.

All I could get from the CEO, after much badgering, was, “Our focus is on building compact systems that could go into all kinds of applications.”

In any case, I stopped by Mission Motors’ new office in SOMA to see if I could ride its record-setting, electric pavement monster and at least I got a video:

Telkomsel and RIM Brought Mobile Campus for Universitas Pelita Harapan

Don’t want to be beaten by innovation of Sony Ericsson and Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM)’s M-Campus, Telkomsel and Research in Motion (RIM) Indonesia as principal of BlackBerry announced Mobile Campus for Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH). The app is developed by Better-B and said only took three months to be completed.

Quite different to what is offered by UBM’s M-Campus — which is bundled with certain product, this UPH’s M-Campus app can be downloaded freely by any UPH student from this link http://uph.better-b.mobi. It supports OS 4.5 as minimum requirement.

As cited from Okezone [link in Indonesian], VP Channel Management Telkomsel, Gideon Edie Purnomo, explained the very reason why Telkomsel is collaborating with RIM for this project is based on consideration that BlackBerry is now the most common smartphones used by Indonesians, especially youngsters. IT Senior Director UPH, Reynier Wayong, strengthened this argument by claiming nearly 90 percent of 10 thousands student in the campus are using BlackBerry.

UPH students may utilize this app to interact in certain academic activities, including:  subject subscription (subscription status and fees), academic material downloads, personal academic data access and other academic need (e.g: GPA, achievement graphic, advisors).

Moreover, this app provides information about campus facility, scholarship, tuition fee, campus map, lecturers, and non-academic activities (extracurricular). Not to mention there’s reference for book collection in the library, job vacancy, and homestay/boarding house around the campus.

The Mobile Campus BlackBerry Telkomsel App is a synergy of Telkomsel and RIM, which is the first in Indonesia. Fully customized UPH app is available to ease students on accessing academic information and other academic activities, whenever and wherever. Coming to the announcement are several Telkomsel and RIM executives for Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Telkomsel admitted the information provided here is still very common, but next year Gideon insists students will be able to pay their tuition using this app. Meanwhile, Telkomsel is still evaluating the impact of this cooperation with UPH and still keep the door widely opened for any possibility to expand similar approach to other universities.

To date, Telkomsel claims the number of BlackBerry users in Indonesia reaches 5 milion subscribers.

Sribu.com: A Mediator between Client and Designer

Some time ago, my brother joined a graphic design competition held by a local website. The website is Sribu.com. According to the profile, this website has an objective to form a community of designer through contests and design making. To be precise, this website acts as a mediator between client who needs design (contest holder) and designers.

The website has a unique concept with some similarity to GantiBaju.com but it is more to a design contest. GantiBaju.com is carrying out a contest and t-shirt selling while Sribu.com focus only on the contest. Sribu.com is closer to 99designs.com which has similar service.

On the main page of Sribu.com we find two options: contest holder and designer. The UX and UI aspect is interesting, simple, and user-friendly for a new visitor, both contest holder or designer.

I tried to explore this site at the first time as a client (contest holder). And yes, here, looking for designer are made easy for clients by giving many design contest needed for their company (e.g. Logo). Official information from the website facilitates those who need various interesting designs made by Sribu designer community.

After choosing the contest design category, clients are required to describe their needs of design clearly so the designers who join the contest can give design that really suits the client’s needs. Next, clients have to choose the prize (some amount of money) for the winner. There are some prize packages available: Bronze (Rp1.500.000), Silver (Rp.3.000.000), Gold (5.000.000) and Other (clients will fill the amount). The bigger the prize, the bigger chance for the contest holder to get many designs. 20% of the prize will be given to Sribu.com for marketing cost, web development and public relation event. It is a quite interesting business plan.

After choosing the package, click contest button and go directly to receipt page showing the amount of money to be paid by the client. When the contest is over, the client as the contest holder will decide the winner by marking on the design. There will be 95% refund to the client if there was no winner.

On the designer page we will find a set of procedure to join a design contest in Sribu.com. After clicking the procedure image, the participant will go directly to the contest page to see the details of the contest, join the discussion with the contest holder and other designers, and submit their design for the contest. They are allowed to send not more than five designs. When the contest is over, the client will announce the winner whose design will be taken.

Some of the designer still doubt that the rights of intellectual (Hak Kekayaan Intelektual /HAKI) of their ideas and work is not guaranteed during the open contest while the other are quite open. Even Sribu.com is just a mediator between client (contest holder) and designers, it could be an interesting facilities when it comes to this rights of intellectual issue. Maybe Sribu.com can provide support like tracking or blocking piracy on their website.

Operate Your Canon DSLR from Your Android With DSLR Controller

iOS users have long had the ability to control their cameras with their iPhones and iPads, but DSLR Controller now brings that to Android for your Canon DSLR.

The software is currently in beta, but getting it working took less than a minute. You just grab it from the Android Marketplace and connect your Canon DSLR via USB (you’ll need a USB host cable if your Android device doesn’t have a regular-sized USB port). Presuming the app is loaded and your camera is on, you should see what your camera sees in the main viewer on the screen. Because all this data is happening via USB, it updates really quickly and is far more usable than the Live View support you’ll get over Wi-Fi on an iPhone app.

In addition to Live View, DSLR Controller lets you adjust pretty much every setting on your camera (e.g. aperture, exposure, ISO, etc.), can take photos, and more. While the app is currently in beta and might not work for every camera, it worked great with my 5D Mark II and support should broaden in the future. If you’ve ever tethered your camera to your computer or an iOS device before, you know the experience is not ideal. DSLR Controller, on the other hand, isn’t cumbersome or slow. It’s a very promising option for tethered shooting.

Bistip.com New Look with New Facilities and API

By the end of July, BisTip freshen up their service with the new look and some new facilities such as insurance, item oriented facilities, Bistipes character, and API for the third party who wants to use their service.
