Facebook’s 2011 f8 Developer Conference

Facebook has finally set a date for its annual f8 developer conference: September 22.

The conference, which Facebook describes as an event for “developers, entrepreneurs and innovators building a more social web by defining tomorrow’s websites, apps and devices,” will take place in San Francisco at the San Francisco Design Center.

At last year’s f8, hosted in August, Facebookannounced a slew of noteworthy changes, including its “Open Graph” and controversial Instant Personalization, which raised numerous privacy concerns and has increased Facebook’s presence on sites across the web, allowing sites to present users with information about their Facebook friends, from the articles they’ve read to the songs they’ve “liked.” (See Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote from last year’s f8 below)

Expect more big news this year, says Facebook. f8 will be “a day filled with new product announcements and deep dives into Facebook technologies,” promised Facebook on its Developer Blog.

Qubes OS: Hacker-Free OS

All operating systems that exist today have a problem in security structure. When running programs, systems and programs can influence each other. Although only one program that has a security hole, hackers can attack all the programs and system components that was loaded into memory.

A hacker from Poland, Joanna Rutkowska who managed to penetrate the best defense of Windows, have any idea how to create a free operating system from hacker intrusions. Capitalize knowledge of the weaknesses of the kernel-based systems, so he built Qubes OS. “Security through isolation” is the principle behind the Qubes OS.

According to this principle, each program “locked up” in a virtual machine (VM). When a PC running the program Firefox, Office, and the media player in parallel, Qubes OS is also running three virtual machines, for each program. If an open security hole in Firefox, the attacker is able to exploit loopholes, but he can not attack the system or access other programs.

The main difference between Qubes OS and conventional operating systems lies in software and hardware interfaces. On Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux, everything is controlled by a large monolithic kernel. Meanwhile, the Qubes OS, the hardware is controlled by a software layer that sleek, called Xen Hypervisor.

Xen virtual machines and to keep the VM is not running on their own. Almost all of the components that communicate with the outside world, such as file system or hardware drivers, are stored in the virtual machine. Xen is the only component in the operating system is not running in virtualization.

One error in Xen will make all the security mechanisms do not work. Of course, it is becoming the biggest weak point. Therefore, the developer team is trying to get Xen remains compact so as to minimize potential errors. For comparison, Xen contains about 100,000 lines of code, while Windows about 10 million, even more. For you, the users prefer the free surfing, you should start thinking about an alternative operating system that is completely safe and has a principle: Qubes OS.

What Was Behind the Timing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz’s Abrupt Ouster?

In the end — the bitter end, that is — there really is no good time to fire someone.

But the timing of the ouster of Carol Bartz as CEO of Yahoo is one of the more curious things about the corporate mishegas at the Silicon Valley Internet giant of late.

That included drastically moving up the clock on Bartz, which was not part of a plan until recently. In fact, several sources were told only last month by Yahoo board members that evaluation of her status — her contract ended at the beginning of 2013 — would not take place until the end of 2011.

That obviously changed.

And, because it is Yahoo — which never met a crisis situation it could not hopelessly complexify — there are numerous and conflicting accounts about the reasons it was done so quickly and abruptly.

They include the board’s feeling that Bartz had not responded to their requests for a credible strategic plan; worries that she would not ever meet annual performance goals, including improving its stock price; upcoming weak third-quarter numbers, which will continue a troublesome downward trend in Yahoo’s key advertising business; and, perhaps most intriguingly, the need to make a move before it was revealed that another activist investor, this time Third Point’s Daniel Loeb, had decided to target Bartz and the Yahoo board.

One thing is certain: The ousting of Bartz was messier than it needed to be, mostly because several sources said she was caught unawares.

“She did not know it was happening, even if she probably should have seen it coming,” said one person familiar with the situation. “And she had no allies at the company to warn her, either.”

Indeed, at the time Bartz was fired over the phone by Chairman Roy Bostock — who had until late this summer been her fervent supporter — she was set to appear at a high-profile Citigroup investor conference in New York.

“It had to happen then, because you can’t put a CEO in front of investors and analysts and then fire her soon after,” said one person close to the situation.

Actually, former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel stepped down only days after appearing at the company’s annual meeting and telling the gathering he was in for the long haul.

The Loeb problem also played a part. According to several sources, while Loeb did not surface until after Bartz’s firing, several board members and Silicon Valley players were aware of his plans to target Yahoo.

While Loeb was not the more heavyweight threat that activist investor Carl Icahn had been in the past, sources said he was planning to call for Bartz’s firing, as well as a board re-do.

The large part of the reason for letting her go finally, of course, centered on not meeting performance goals set by the board.

While the overhaul of a hairball of systems and a rejiggering of staff was quickly done by the longtime and experienced manager, the turnaround and renewed product innovation promised by Bartz was slow in coming.

In addition, advertising sales results had worsened and recent quarterly reports showed little progress.

To remedy the situation, directors had asked Bartz to present a strategic plan earlier this year, which she did with the help of top execs. It further underscored the idea of Yahoo as a top-level digital media company.

But the board pressed for more details and felt Bartz was not the right exec to carry out the kind of dramatic renewal of Yahoo that is needed.

Looming, too, was the third-quarter results on October 18, which sources said will show continued weakness at Yahoo.

For that, it’s likely the fired Bartz will get the blame, giving the board — which is also being criticized by large shareholders and others — a bit of breathing room as it figures out what to do next.

In other words, with no good news to report, the Yahoo board decided to deliver some bad news to Bartz.

(In related news, according to an 8-K filing by the company, interim Yahoo CEO and also CFO Tim Morse got a small bump in base salary from $600,000 to $750,000, effective September 15, 2011.)

Free Virus Protection For Mac Computer

Mac computers hold a reputation of being resistant to the infection of computer viruses and threats that are constantly attacking many computers. Some computer users believe that the Mac Operating System is simply more secure than other operating systems, the main reason is that hackers have simply preferred to focus on the most widely used operating system, and we all know that that is Microsoft Windows. At present, the increasing popularity and gaining market share of Mac computers, viruses and malicious software affecting Apple computers are increasing.

What are the types of viruses affect Mac computers?

According to computers experts, there are several types of viruses that can cause a Mac computer to crash. These threats take advantage of security flaws in Microsoft Office and they can also have negative effect to Mac computers when the programs are used on those machines. Another source of viruses are browser plug-ins that are used for viewing animated Flash and PDF files that can also pick up possible threats. Other files that contain trojan horses, spyware and worms from downloading torrent, pirated software, games or adult sites can also infect Mac computers.

How to protect you Mac against viruses?

At present companies such as Symantec, McAfee, and Intego have developed and released virus applications to protect Mac computers. These companies make products that help computer users to protect Macs from threats and viruses. These applications can be bought or downloaded for free directly from the company websites. If your computer system is already infected with a virus, you can also make use of virus-removal applications to track and eliminate the harmful programs on your computer. The best way to prevent a virus is to be careful especially when it comes to visiting websites that you are not sure about their security. Do not open attached files in e-mails especially if you do not know who sent them to you. Try to download security updates for your computer system and browser. Lastly, avoid downloading files from torrent or meta-search engine sites.

Google’s Photovine : Mobile Photo Sharing

The site for Google’s new photo-related project Photovine has gone live, but the actual product or app is still missing. Located at photovine.com, the site currently features an image of a mobile app – interestingly, the device in the image is definitely an iPhone and not an Android device – and a short description of the upcoming product: “Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before.” The site also contains a Privacy Policy that says, “Photovine is offered by Slide (part of Google Inc),” as well as a support page that explains some details about the project.“Photovine is a community that’s about creating fun and unique collections of photos that we call Vines,” the support page says, explaining that a vine is “like a constantly growing family of photos connected through a common caption created by you, your friends, and people all over the world”. Google also makes it clear that it will not tolerate just any kind of photo. “As a rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t want your family to see it, you probably shouldn’t post it,” the support page says. At this point it’s unclear whether this project is connected with Google’s recently launched social networking service Google+, but it seems to be an independent product. Recent reports indicated that Facebook is working on a photo-sharing app of its own, and in March 2011, a photo-sharing app called Color piqued a lot of interest, which seems to have largely dissipated by now. The Photovine app is available in Apple iTunes store and can be used on iPhones. You can click photos on your mobile and share with your friends with a particular tag. Also, users can see photos posted by their friends under the same tag.

Google said that the Photovine version 1.3 includes:
- Invite system replaced with open signup – everyone can join Photovine now!
- Crash fix for posting a photo when the feed has a timeline break
- If user adds a note to a post, include that note as the first comment

It seems like Google, which acquired Slide, the social-media company that developed Photovine in 2010, planning to add more features to the app. Click here to download Photovine app. Stay tuned for more updates.
